Progressive Leadership

Established the division of pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology, the first in the private sector in India at Apollo Hospital, Delhi in 1997.

Instrumental role in setting up the first successful pediatric liver transplant program in India in 1998 at Apollo Hospitals, Delhi.

The Apollo Transplant Program has been the busiest solid organ transplant program in the world since 2012.

Appointed as the Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group at age 37 in 2005 (12 hospitals, 3400 beds, revenue of USD 139 million). In 2021, the group has expanded to 10,000 beds in 73 hospitals to become India’s largest healthcare provider with a revenue of USD 1.5 billion.

Stewarded the first international accreditation of a hospital in India by Joint Commission International (JCI) in 2005. Guided the patient safety and quality improvement initiative resulting in the accreditation of 8 Apollo Hospitals by JCI, the largest by a private hospital group in the region and accreditation of 32 hospitals by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH). Served as the only Asian JCI Physician Surveyor from January 2008 to 2010.

Elected as the President of Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO) in January 2020 after serving as the Vice President (2017 – 2020) and Secretary General (2014 – 2017).

Conceived and launched The Global Indian Physicians COVID-19 Collaborative on 11th April 2020 in association with The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), the British Association of Physicians of Indian origin (BAPIO), the Canadian Indian Network Society (CINS) and Canadian Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage (CAPIH) and Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO) so that physicians of Indian origin from across the globe can collaborate in the war against COVID-19.

BOARD EXPERIENCE

Apollo Health and Lifestyle Ltd. (AHLL) since 2015. AHLL runs the largest network of primary care clinics, diabetes (Apollo Sugar), dialysis, day care surgery, birthing and dental centres. AHLL has made a foray into diagnostics and has established a chain of diagnostic centres.

Apollo Telehealth Services Private Limited since 2015. The Apollo Telemedicine network with a presence in 48 countries, 25 Indian states and more than 100 cities and has to its credit path breaking initiatives such as Telemedicine in Himalayas (> 10000 ft), the e Urban Health Centre, the e Ophthalmology, the e Aushdhi (medicines), the e Radiology and e ICU programs.

Medvarsity Online Limited since 2015. Medvarsity has grown to become Asia’s largest healthcare Ed Tech company with 150 programmes having trained 200,000 health professionals.

Member of the Institute Body (IB) of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, (PGIMER) Chandigarh, 2009 – 2014. IB is the highest decision making body of PGIMER headed by the Union Cabinet Minister for Health. PGIMER has consistently been ranked in the top 3 academic health institutes in India.

Member of the Asian Pan Pacific Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (APPSPGHAN), Executive Council since 2005.

Served on the International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA), Executive Council (2005 – 2009) and the Commonwealth Association of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (CAPGAN), Executive Council (2001 – 2007).

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Launched The Global Indian Physicians COVID-19 Collaborative on 11th April 2020.

Initiated 15 programs:

  • Advocacy – conceptualised 6 position papers that shall have a far reaching impact on graduate medical, post graduate medical, nursing, allied health education in India

  • Instituted six categories of awards to recognise global Indian doctors

  • Developed clinical knowledge, leadership and mentorship programs

  • Established women’s health, innovation and mind body and soul equilibrium programs

Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group since 2005

Apollo Hospitals Group has 73 hospitals, more than 100 clinics with a presence in quaternary care, tertiary care, secondary care, primary care, IT, education, research, project consultancy, pharmacy retailing and telehealth.

Responsible for all clinical services including launch of new services, recruitment, credentialing, privileging of consultants, outcome measurement, patient safety and quality improvement. Oversight of clinical governance through 15 multidisciplinary committees.

Created and implemented:

  • Apollo Clinical Excellence (ACE@25) – a clinical balanced scorecard which has been written up as a case study for MBA Programs

  • The Apollo Standards of Clinical Care (TASCC)

  • Apollo Incident Reporting System (AIRS), Apollo Critical Policies, Plans and Procedures (ACPPP)

  • Apollo Quality Program (AQP)

  • Apollo Mortality Review (AMR)

Helped curate the Apollo International Congress on Patient Safety (IPSC) in 2011 which has become the most sought-after annual forum on Patient Safety in Asia.

Conceptualized the annual Apollo Innovation and Quality awards.

Advisory role in the creation of the Total Health program – a pathbreaking scalable, replicable and sustainable philanthropic initiative catering to the physical, mental, social, economic, spiritual and ecological wellbeing of 60000 people in rural India.

Academics

  • Expanded the academic program from 3 locations to 14 Apollo hospitals accredited by the National Board of Examination (NBE).

  • With more than 900 trainees undergoing training in 44 specialities and super specialities, 10% of all NBE trainees in India train at Apollo Hospitals.

  • In 2021, more than 350 papers were published.

Research

  • Launched Apollo Medicine, the quarterly official journal of the Apollo Group in 2004.

  • Created the policies to recognise academic and research excellence through a professorship program.

  • Guiding the publication program. In 2019, 369 papers were published.

Senior Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist since 1997

Appointed as a Senior Consultant at the age of 29, the youngest ever Senior Consultant in the Apollo Group in 1997.

Established the division of paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology, the first in the private sector in India at Apollo Hospital, Delhi in 1997.

Created the first nationally approved 2-year training fellowship (Fellowship of NBE) in India in 2014, the first annual hands on pediatric endoscopy course in South Asia in 2014 and the first annual training program for pediatric gastroenterology hepatology sand nutrition in India in 2011.

Helped set up the first successful pediatric liver transplant program in India in 1998 at Apollo Hospitals, Delhi. The Apollo Transplant Program has been the busiest solid organ transplant program in the world since 2012. In 2019, 1440 solid organ transplants were performed. The Apollo Liver Program has now performed more than 3800 transplants, including 426 in children.

Director Medical Services, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals 2003-2005

Credited with leading the first international accreditation of a hospital in India in 2005 by JCI. Apollo Delhi was only the 6th accredited hospital in Asia at the time.

Recruited key specialists and expanded clinical services which resulted in bed occupancy going up from 338 to 486 (43% increase) and the turnover increasing from USD 34 million to 57 million USD (40% increase) in 28 months.

PROFESSORSHIP

Appointed as an Honorary Clinical Professor at Macquarie University, Sydney in Australia in 2015.

Served as an Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia from 2009 – 2015.
